« Le
devoir de mémoire »
Nous sommes nombreux dans notre région de Moselle à nous
souvenir qu’il n’y a pas si longtemps de cela, notre terre
de Lorraine fût libérée de la tyrannie et de l’oppression... |

Moselle River 1944 Association prepares the commemorations
From one reunion to the other and through numerous contacts both in France and in the United States, one small piece after another, the Moselle River 1944 Association puts together the large puzzle of the manifestations to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation that will take place over the whole sector around Metzervisse, between 10 and 17 of November 2004.
At the last board reunion, the committee welcomed the American General Ray Bell, whose father was the CO of the 359th Infantry Regiment (90th Infantry Division) which crossed the Moselle River at Malling and fought in the terrible battle of Kerling-lès-Sierck. This was General Bell’s second visit with Moselle River 1944 to put the final touch to the commemorative official program.
Close to eighty American Veterans of the 90th and 95th Infantry Divisions and 3rd Cavalry Group are expected. Some of the most important events Pascal Moretti, President of the Moselle River 1944 Association and his team are working on at this time are an exhibits of WWII photographs and objects to be shown at Guénange and Kédange, the publication of a “first day” stamp, parades with WWII military vehicles, a dinner-concert with an homage to Glenn Miller and his music, with the participation of Anton Roman orchestra, the inauguration of monuments and steles dedicated to American soldiers killed in the liberation of our region, reception of US Veterans by the towns and villages in which they fought in 1944.
Request for eyewitness accounts
In addition, let’s not forget Anthony Kemp’s book, an indispensable recollection when it comes out in book stores, and Sylvia Chieu’s comic book, both of which will complete “this ambitious but realistic program meant to be equal to the event”, according to President Moretti.
To meet its goal, the association has received numerous supports and its official character has been recognized by the “Mission of the 60th Anniversary of the Landings and of the Liberation of France” (Mission du 60e Anniversaire des Débarquements et de la Libération de la France), whose endorsement it needs considering the size of the task.
In order to enlighten this period of the history of our region, personal eyewitness accounts are welcome. Texts and photographs must be sent to the seat of the association at the Metzervisse City Hall. While school children have been asked to meet with “older citizens”, a school teacher has communicated to the association the in-depth work done by students of the Veckering school, about thirty years ago, but more than ever of current interest.
In particular, a search is being launched to help find the family who sheltered a 3rd Cavalry Group platoon of thirty men during the night of 31 August to 1st September 1944. Under the leadership of Lt. Jackson, they were on a reconnaissance mission to Thionville. The individuals who recognize themselves or anyone who can shed some light on this search are invited to contact Jean-Pascal Speck, Vice-President of Moselle River 1944 Association: ph: 03 82 88 53 65.
