«The need to remember»
There are many of us in the Moselle region who remember that it was not all the long ago that our territory, Lorraine, was liberated from tyranny and oppression …. |

« How police-chief Moretti became involved » |
|
How a chance meeting turned into a labour
of remembrance. On 12 Septemlber 2001, the day after
the terrible tragedy of the Twin Towers of New York,
, two Americans
became involved in a serious road traffic accident
in the vicinity of Metzervisse, north-east France.
As a result of that tragic coincidence a friendship
was born between Pascal Moretti, who in his capacity
as a gendarme, came to take a statement about the
accident, and the two GI's who had come back to retrace
their
past. The
two ended up in hospital, and Pascal, as he listened
to them, began to comprehend the reasons for their
pilgrimage that had brought them to Lorraine. Their
aim had been to meet up with a local family who had
kindly put them up.
He learned from them the great epic of the 90
Infantry Divisdion who had come all the
way from the
Normandy beaches to liberate the region in November 1944.
•
A bitter battle
• Bitter resistance by the occupier
Further coincidence emerged
when the driver of the car,
Joseph STOBBE, the
mere severely wounded of
the two, told
Pascal that he had already
been wounded a few hundred
metres away from the scene
of the accident, that time
by a bullet - almost 67 years
previously on 16 November
1944.
The wheel of destiny
had turned full circle.
Joseph STOBBE had promised
himself never to return to
that place that had brought
him bad luck, but had changed
his mind. Health permitting,
he would make one last trip
to visit the sites of his
past military experiences.
History has a habit of repeating
itself and he hoped to be
back again to take part in
the ceremonies that are being
planned for November 2004.
The above encounter was the
catalyst for the founding
of the Association
Moselle River 1944 - remembrance
and commemoration. . To preserve
the knowledge and to honour
the deeds and sacrifice of
those soldiers who came across
the ocean to bring us the
precious gift of LIBERTY. |
